Ògún is a primordial orisha in Yorùbá kingdom. The Yoruba kingdom largly encompases south western Nigeria, benin, togo and south east Ghana ( Nigeria being the source). In some traditions in Yorùbá Nigeria; Ògún is said to have cleared a path for the other orisha to descend onto earth, using a metal ax and with the assistance of a dog.
In his earthly life; Ògún is said to be the first ( king ) Ọọ̀ni of Ilé-Ifẹ̀. When some of his subjects failed to show reverence, Ògún killed them and ultimately himself with his own weapon. He disappeared into the earth at a place called Ire- Ekiti ( today called Ekiti state), with the promise to help those who call upon his name. Ògún followers believe him to have 'wo ile sun', to have disappeared into the earth's surface instead of dying. Throughout his life, he was known to have fought for the people of Ire, thus is also known as Onire. Ògún is now celebrated in, Ogun, Ekiti, Oyo, and Ondo State; all located in Nigeria. Ògún is also worshiped and celebrated in parts of south America including Brazil, Haiti, cuba, dominican republic, Southern united states.
Ògún; apart from being the name of a Yorùbá deity, has multiple meanings that are all pronounced differently. for ex: Ògún - Orisha of Iron, Ogun- war, Ogun- Medicine, Ogun- Property, Ogun- twenty, Ogun- long, Ogun-state, Ogun state and Ogun- problem.
Ògún ònà was Created in Kotor, Montenegro along with many others; with the purpose of communicating history, traditions and culture of the Yorùbá people to the people of Montenegro. while also feeding off the energy and culture of Montenegro in my creations.
