The phrase “Land of the Lost” has many references, most notably from the television series of that title (1974-1976). In the opening sequence, the Marshall family is afloat within the tenuous structure of a river raft. While descending a waterfall, the rocky terrain displaces them through a portal in time and space. Realizing they are in an alternate dimension; they spend the rest of the series trying to “find their way home”- a familiar trope. Yet they soon realize that falling down a “rabbit hole” (another familiar trope) into a new world necessitates navigation. In turn, as our own world becomes more surveyed, mapped, and vectorized, the concept of the planetary simultaneously invokes local belonging and global alienation - alternately, local alienation and global belonging. Additionally, the compression of the past, present, and future within the narrative of the television series suggests that the ground in which the Marshalls and in turn, we, find ourselves on is unsteady.

The works presented in this exhibition explore familiar (non) terrains…

Reflexively, the participants include eight international artists with whom the gallery has previously worked, as well as seven current artists from South Florida. This purposeful juxtaposition, especially the artworks chosen, begs for larger and more existential questions that pertain to: where are we, why are we here, and where are we going?
